“All the world’s a stage…”

The tendrils of the internet stretch out from every phone, tablet, wifi router, hub, phone outlet and fibre optic connection, spinning a network ad infinitum woven into the fabric of every human fingerprint and footprint on the world’s surface.

This isn’t the worst of it, though. The worst of online ubiquity is convenient regulation, of oneself by oneself or by one’s peers or by one’s government. The net is omnipresent. The net’s power to expose is omniscient. Individual human beings try to mitigate this by contorting into shapes of anonymity, disassociating with large-scale groups for fear of triggering notice. Atomisation, therefore.

Perhaps this is inevitable. Perhaps it’s not ultimately undesirable. But right now, in 2018, we are getting plenty of downside and not enough upside from the atomisation under the radar. We, the anonymous faces dull reflected in a billion backlit screens, turn some of our precious senses into electromagnetic patterns pinging over the world-map, directing the patterns as desire and impulse demands like eponymous pinball wizards.

The internet never sleeps and always responds. Its response is parsed back into logos, sight and sound: two senses direct, one through imagination, a limbic tri-catalyst exciting emotion and synergising dopamine reaction.

The Virtual Voyeur podcast has been described as the toxoplasmosis of the ether. Its purpose is simple: to draw some of those pinging patterns of “attention” away from the humdrum gravity of clickbait and porn, focusing them instead on something greater - more expansive, more human, more singular, less banal everyday, more special rare occasion - so when the response is parsed back into logos, sight and sound, the imagination is fed on a diet more ‘haute’ than could have been possible before the unfortunate atomisation diaspora.

Think:

  • You are standing at the centre of Taksim Square in Istanbul where the iron fist of Islam slams down against the gateway between Europe and Asia; and experience the revolution in real-time, as it happens, when it happens.

  • Or you are at the front of a million Russians moshing to Metallica’s Enter Sandman while a dozen military surveillance choppers thunder overhead like helicopter subwoofers.

  • Or you are attending the best concert in the world, watching the tournament finals, sitting in the lecture hall of the finest university, watching the mushroom cloud vaporising another Pacific atoll, taking a gentle stroll along the Cornish cliffpaths, seated alongside the cosmonauts on the latest mission to the International Space Station… you name it, the Virtual Voyeur could take you there.

  • It is not you alone, having these experiences, but as many others as make the same choice. In most cases these companions will be silent and invisible and irrelevant but maybe you want to see the concert or experience the revolution with friends or walk those enchanted pagan paths with a loved one? This you can do.

  • And if the night ends exciting the senses to create a little home-made pornography, it’ll be a porn more noble than some public hub of wanking strangers paying out a little relief from the degradation of their broken lives.
